Traditions and History

This tradition is an old one! It comes from back in the Roman days, when it was actually a small loaf of wheat bread. During the middle ages, this loaf of bread was transformed into small, sticky sweet breads that were actually brought by the guests! They were piled high in front of the Bride and Groom to create a towering effect. Their task would be to attempt to successfully kiss over the pile, ensuring fertility and prosperity in their future. The wedding day dessert that we know and love today seems to appear at the wedding of England’s Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. Her cake was a multi tiered masterpiece that was roughly 9 feet in diameter and 300 pounds!!
