Flower Girl and Ring Bearer accesories!
Flower Girls and Ring Bearers are an old wedding day tradition that has withstood the test of time.
Today, these little girls are seen carrying baskets of sweet smelling flower petals down the aisle to scatter before the bride, while the little gentlemen symbolically deliver the all important wedding bands to the alter on their ornamental ring pillows. They are a well loved moment in the processional and their performance (good or bad) is a highly anticipated moment. These pint size attendants have their own roots in our superstitious past.
Historically, children would scatter a combination of different herbs and available grains before the bride. The purpose? To promote fertility, of course (in fact, the presence of children during the ceremony is somewhat symbolic of the couple’s future children). Flowers soon came into play, being scattered before the bride so that she could enjoy happiness and joy in her new life. The ring bearer, being a fairly new role in the historical sense of weddings, seemed to have developed to bring more symbolism to the presentation of the wedding rings themselves.
The Role Today
Today, these two wedding day additions sometimes steal the show with their youthful charm. Don’t imagine that your mini attendants will always angelically float down the aisle doing what they’re supposed to. Instead, keep an open mind and try practicing in advance with them in both your ceremony location and in a crowded place. And have a back-up plan in place if your little performers get their first real case of stage fright. Have mom or a close relative at the end of the aisle helping to coax them down or rescue them. If you are including flower girls or ring bearers in your ceremony, you might want to consider tying their accessories into your wedding day theme.
