Flower Girls and Ring Bearers are another wedding day tradition that has withstood the test of time. Today, these little girls are seen carrying baskets of sweet smelling flower petals down the aisle to scatter before the bride, while The little gentlemen symbolically deliver the all important wedding bands to the alter on their ornamental ring pillows. Historically, children would scatter a combination of different herbs and available grains before the bride. The purpose? To promote fertility, of course. Flowers soon came into play, being scattered before the bride so that she could enjoy happiness and joy in her new life. The ring bearer, being a fairly new role in the historical sense of weddings, seemed to have developed to bring more symbolism to the presentation of the wedding rings themselves.
Today, these two wedding day additions sometimes steal the show with their youthful charm.
